Amharic & Tigrinya Translation Services
Certified Amharic to English and Tigrinya to English translation of Ethiopian and Eritrean documents, with Ethiopian calendar dates converted accurately. $22.99 per page, 24 hour delivery for up to 3 pages.
Amharic and Tigrinya are written in the Ge'ez (Ethiopic) script, and Ethiopian documents use their own calendar, which runs about seven to eight years behind the Gregorian one. A date copied without conversion is a common error in Ethiopian translations. We give every date as written plus its Gregorian equivalent.
- Birth, marriage and death certificates, kebele ID cards, school and university records
- Tigrinya documents from Eritrea and the Tigray region
- Names follow the given name, father's name, grandfather's name pattern, kept exactly as written

The Ethiopian Calendar: Why Dates Need Converting
Ethiopia uses its own calendar of twelve 30-day months plus a short thirteenth month, Pagume, of five or six days. The new year falls in September, and the year number is seven or eight years behind the Gregorian year depending on the month.
A birth recorded in the Ethiopian calendar as 1990 is not 1990 in the Gregorian calendar. If that date is copied straight across, the translated birth certificate will not match your passport. We write each date as it appears on the document and add the converted Gregorian date in brackets, so an officer can check both.
Names on Ethiopian and Eritrean Documents
- Most Ethiopians and Eritreans do not have a family surname. A full name is the person's given name, followed by the father's given name and often the grandfather's
- Forms abroad often treat the father's name as a surname. We keep the order on the document and can note how it maps to your passport
- Ge'ez script has no single standard way to write names in Latin letters, so we follow your passport spelling when you send it
Tigrinya Translation
Tigrinya, spoken in Eritrea and the Tigray region of Ethiopia, uses the same Ge'ez script as Amharic but is a separate language. Eritrean documents may be in Tigrinya, Arabic or English, sometimes on the same page. Upload your document and we assign a Tigrinya translator where needed, at the same $22.99 per page.

Ethiopian Calendar Conversion at a Glance
The Ethiopian year starts on Meskerem 1, which falls on September 11, or September 12 in the year before a Gregorian leap year. A year from Meskerem to Tahsas is 7 years behind the Gregorian year; from Tir to Pagume it is 8 years behind.
| Ethiopian month | Usually begins | Add to the Ethiopian year |
|---|---|---|
| Meskerem | September 11 | 7 |
| Tikimt | October 11 | 7 |
| Hidar | November 10 | 7 |
| Tahsas | December 10 | 7 (8 from January 1) |
| Tir | January 9 | 8 |
| Yekatit | February 8 | 8 |
| Megabit | March 10 | 8 |
| Miyazya | April 9 | 8 |
| Ginbot | May 9 | 8 |
| Sene | June 8 | 8 |
| Hamle | July 8 | 8 |
| Nehase | August 7 | 8 |
| Pagume (5 or 6 days) | September 6 | 8 |
Start dates shift by one day around Gregorian leap years. We check every date individually rather than relying on the table.
Ethiopian Numerals and the Ethiopian Clock
Most Ethiopian documents use Western digits, but some older records and religious documents write numbers in Ge'ez numerals, such as ፩ for 1 and ፲ for 10. We convert them to standard digits and keep the original form where it matters.
Ethiopia also counts the hours of the day from about 6 a.m., so 1 o'clock in Ethiopian time is 7 a.m. When a document records a time, such as the time of birth, we give it as written and note the international time where the document makes the system clear.
