Multilingual Extracts and When You Still Need a Translation
Dutch municipalities can issue some civil records as multilingual international extracts, with headings in several languages. Within the EU, multilingual standard forms can also replace a translation for certain public documents. Neither is guaranteed to be accepted by USCIS, UKVI or IRCC, which expect a complete English translation of any foreign-language content.
If your extract still contains Dutch entries, remarks or stamps, order a certified translation. We translate every part that is not already in English and leave nothing for an officer to guess.
Dutch Names, Dates and Terms
- Name prefixes such as van, de and van der (tussenvoegsels) are kept exactly as written, so the surname matches your passport and other records
- Dates are written day-month-year. We keep them unambiguous in English so 03-04 is never read as March 4
- Dutch and Belgian legal terms, such as notarial deeds and municipal registrations, are translated with their function explained where no English equivalent exists
Apostilles on Dutch and Belgian Documents
The Netherlands and Belgium are both members of the Hague Apostille Convention. When an authority asks for an apostille, it goes on the original document in the country that issued it. Send us the document with its apostille and we translate both together. See apostille translation for details.

Dutch Academic Records for WES and ECE
Dutch and Flemish diplomas and grade lists use a 1 to 10 scale, where 6 is generally the lowest pass and grades above 8 are uncommon. We translate the grades as written and include the grading key if it is on the document, so the evaluator can apply it.
Many Dutch universities also issue an English Diploma Supplement. It describes your degree but does not replace a translation of the diploma itself when an evaluator asks for one, so send both and tell us which pages you need translated.
Dutch Documents From Suriname and the Caribbean
Dutch is also the official language of Suriname, and Dutch documents come from Aruba, Curaçao and Sint Maarten, which are part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Records from Aruba and Curaçao can mix Dutch with Papiamento, and records from Sint Maarten often include English. We translate every part that is not already in English.
Surinamese civil records follow Dutch models but use their own office names and register numbers, which we keep exactly as written. Suriname has been a party to the Hague Apostille Convention since 1975, so Surinamese documents can carry an apostille, and we translate it with the document.
