What Is a Bangladeshi Divorce Certificate?
In Bangladesh, the primary divorce document for Muslims is the Talaq Nama, the official confirmation of divorce issued under the Muslim Family Laws Ordinance 1961. When a husband pronounces talaq, section 7 requires him to give written notice to the Chairman (of the Union Parishad, Paurashava or City Corporation) and to send a copy to his wife.
The Chairman then convenes an Arbitration Council within 30 days to try to reconcile the couple. If the notice is not withdrawn, the talaq takes effect 90 days after it was delivered, and the Chairman's office issues the Talaq Nama. This is the document immigration authorities usually ask for as proof that the marriage ended.
For divorces initiated by the wife through the courts, a court divorce decree (আদালতের তালাক ডিক্রি) is issued by a Family Court in Bangladesh. Where a wife has the right to divorce delegated to her in the original Kabin Nama, she may exercise this right and receive a Talaq Nama through the same Arbitration Council process. All of these documents are written in Bangla and require a certified English translation before any overseas immigration authority or legal institution will accept them.
Note on spelling: Bangladeshi law spells the word "talaq". The 1961 Ordinance uses it in its section heading, and the 1974 Registration Act uses "Talaq-i-tafweez". "Talak" is a common romanization of the Bangla word তালাক, so you may see "Talak Nama" on forms and in visa guidance. Both spellings mean the same document, and we use the statutory "talaq" in our translations.
Where a prior marriage must be declared, each authority sets its own translation rules. UK Visas and Immigration requires an English translation of any document not in English or Welsh. USCIS requires a full English translation with the translator's certification for I-130 petitions involving a previous marriage. IRCC asks for a certified translation, or an affidavit from the translator, in spousal sponsorship cases.

Talaq Nama (City Corporation)
For urban divorces in Dhaka, Chittagong, and other city corporation areas, the Arbitration Council operates through the ward office rather than a Union Parishad. Where a divorce was contested or initiated by the wife through a Family Court, the court issues a formal decree (ডিক্রি) in Bangla. Divorce Notice Letter
The initial written notice of talaq sent to the Union Parishad Chairman is sometimes also submitted to immigration authorities alongside the final Talaq Nama. This notice is in Bangla and may be handwritten or typed.
